Trobriand Islands - Traditional Village
Trobriand Island village is divided into few small areas to express sociological rules. All the houses in the inner row are store houses and yam houses – personal huts of the chief. Houses of the outer ring belong to married people, widows and widowers. There is only one difference between these two rings – cooking is not allowed in the inner ring.
At the centre of the village are also dancing ground and burial ground. Ceremonies of traditional dancing and burial held here.
Traditional villages at Trobriand Islands can be seen by tourists only on daily tours. Places to stay are located in ’urban areas’ of the archipelago and traditional yam houses rarely can be seen there. On these daily tours you can learn more about the life and culture of Trobrianders and about their traditional ceremonies.
